We professionally wash & repair rugs for residents of Camden & Primrose Hill, NW1 and the surrounding areas.
A rug's worst enemy is dry soil. Regular vacuuming is essential to minimise the amount of dry soil in your rug however it will still build up. This soil works it's way down into the foundation of the rug and grinds away at the fibres as you walk on it. Just think about how much soil you vacuum out of your carpets and how coarse this soil is compared to the fibres in your rug. Reducing the sandpaper effect of this soil must be your main priority.
Before washing any rug we remove all the dry soil using a number of different processes. Our mechanical dusting process is probably the most important part of the cleaning cycle. A rug cannot be washed while it still contains dry soil as this will turn to mud. As the rug dries, a wicking effect will bring the mud to the surface of the rug. We dust all rugs thoroughly so that the wash process is flawless! Even if your rug does not require a full wash it will still benefit from being dusted.
Our rug cleaning process is known as full immersion washing. Dusted rugs are completely immersed in cold water which contains a very mild natural fibre detergent. This is worked into the rug using either mechanical rotary brushes or a soft hand brush. Once washed, rugs are centrifuge rinsed to ensure they are completely free of all suspended soil and detergent. A sour solution is also used to keep the dyes stable. This system of washing and rinsing is so thorough it is comparable to how clothes are washed in a washing machine, only more controlled and safe.
If your rug contains pet urine or moth casings then we adapt our cleaning and introduce special steps.
Removing pet urine from rugs is a specialist procedure which we regularly carry out for our clients. Urine is acidic but eventually turns Alkaline once dried on a rug. This alkalinity can destabilise the colours in a rug and cause them to migrate. We bathe these rugs in a urine neutralising solution which targets the urine and removes the odour associated with it. Although urine sometimes leaves permanent staining it must still be neutralised to safeguard the rug's dyes and remove the odour.
Moths can literally eat a rug down to the foundation. We have a treatment for moth infested rugs which is applied after the rug is washed. Any moth damage can be repaired after the rug is washed and treated. This treatment is essential for rugs that are going into storage or being laid in a dark area as this is when they are most at risk.
